[Jackson], N.C. -James H. Jones was a fanner who in 1971 became Northampton County's first black school board representative. He played a pivotal role in the integration of the County's local schools during the 1960s and 70s. Later, in 1980, his vision and leadership as North Carolina's First Black School Board Chairman introduced a new era in education and had a marked effect on racial progress in the State. Recognizing his extraordinary achievements, in 2014, he was posthumously inducted into the Educators Hall of Fame at East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. The Odom Shooting Range is located in Jackson, North Carolina in Northampton County. The range features a 100-yard rifle range with eight shooting stations, a 25-yard pistol range with eight shooting stations, and a 3-D target archery range with six shooting stations.

TYPE OF WEAPONS HAND GUNS, RIFLES, ARCHERY EQUIPMENT. SEPARATE ARCHERY RANGE WITH TARGETS. THE BOATING ACCESS AREA IS SCHEDULED TO COMPLETE IN FEBRUARY 2020 ASSUMING NO FURTHER ISSUES.
The multipurpose area would include a boating access area and a public shooting range. The proposed boating access area will provide access to the Roanoke River, bridging a large gap between two existing boating access areas. The boating access area would include a two-lane ramp with floating courtesy docks and approximately 40 parking spaces. A planned shooting range would feature a 100-yard rifle range, a 20-yard pistol range and a 50-yard rifle/pistol range. The site for the project was provided by the N.C. Division of Prisons.
